Yogyakarta (Antara Bali) - An event organized on Friday to mark the release of 170 turtle hatchlings, also known as `tukik¿ at Trisik Beach in the Kulon Progo district was attended by students of elementary school and kindergarten in the district, an official said.
Jaka Samudra, the chairman of the Penyu Abadi Conservation Group said that the release of the hatchlings will now figure as an annual event in the district¿s tourism agenda during August every year.
"We invited students from kindergarten and elementary schools, police officers and the local staff of the Natural Resource Conservation Agency (BKSDA) to participate in the release function," he said on Friday.
A total of 64 turtles have laid as many as 6,053 eggs on the Trisik beach since 2004, out of which 5,734 have hatched.
"During 2012, four turtles swam onshore to Trisik and laid 350 turtle eggs, of which 330 eggs have hatched," Samudra pointed out.(IGT)
