Semarang (Antara Bali) - Rector of the University of Paramadina Jakarta Anies Baswedan said political maneuvers should not be allowed to have influence on the process of upholding the law.
"The process of law enforcement should continue regardless of political maneuvers," Anies said addressing a journalism school here on Monday.
He said crisis in law enforcement in Indonesia has come to an alarming level as legal certainty seems to have lost its existence in the country.
Citing an example, he pointed to the recent failure of the prosecution office in its attempt to arrest former chief of police detective Susno Duadji.
A team of prosecutors failed to arrest retired Comr. Gen. Susno Duadji in Bandung after police interference.
"I think it was only a tip of the iceberg of crisis in law enforcement in the country," he said.
He said in fact the country is facing a time of crisis in law enforcement almost everyday but crisis often passed unnoticed.
Indonesia would be in danger unless there was change and the crisis is sorted out immediately, he said.
Therefore, the people should elect a leader who has the courage and firmness in dealing with the crisis, one that would not compromise in fighting corruption, he said.
"In fact the weakness in our law enforcement is in its execution. We already have the law and regulations , bur weak in in their implementation," he said. (*/DWA)
