Jakarta (Antara Bali) - Indonesian military (TNI) chief Gen. Moeldoko met with leaders of PP Muhammadiyah and PB Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU), two largest non political Islamic organization in the country to discuss issue over Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
Moeldoko said ISIS flag had been raised in a number of areas in the country such as Solo, Jambi, Pekanbaru and Aceh Timur.
"ISIS has not existed as an organization in the country but the spirit of ISIS could be felt," the general said at the meeting in the military headquarters in Cilangkap, East Jakarta.
TNI, therefore, wants to hear inputs from Islamic organizations about indications of ISIS presence in the country that early steps could be taken against the illegal movement, he said.
"The spirit of NU and Muhammadiyah , which have high tolerance, is expected to prevent the penetration of the illegal ideology that could threaten the national integrity," he said.
The two influential Islamic organizations have declared their rejection of ISIS .
General chairman of PP Muhammadiyah Din Syamsudin said "ISIS movement is an old product but used a new brand. Adoption of its ideology would bring about disaster to the country."
Din Syamsudin said ISIS is an embryo of Islamic fundamentalists that could trigger wide spread conflict .
"ISIS would justify all means including murders to achieve its goals," he said.
He said Indonesian Islam is moderate and modern , adding history shows that radicalism could not grow in Indonesia.
General chairman of PBNU Said Aqil Siradj said the Indonesian people need to strengthen their spirit of nationalism before improving their understanding of religious faith.
He cited countries where all people are Muslims like Somalia and Afghanistan are battered by conflicts and chaos because they had no sense of nationalism. (WDY)
