Jakarta (Antara Bali) - The House of Representatives (DPR) will review the police's remuneration scheme following the various cases of violence in the regions that have tarnished the force's image, Deputy Speaker Priyo Budi Santoso said.
"The remuneration of law enforcers was among other things intended to improve their welfare so that they would be encouraged to uphold the law professionally," Priyo said here on Friday.
Yet, with the occurrence of police brutality in a number of regions which had smeared their image, Priyo said, there was now the possibility that their remuneration scheme would be scrapped.
Priyo said the House would recalculate jointly the work system in the police institution.
"Our aim is to improve the system. I hope , however, that the public will exercise self-restraint. The people should not all of a sudden become disillusioned about the police institution, particularly the Indonesian National Police (Polri)," he said.
Priyo made the statement in response to the various cases of police violence which had lately came into the public spotlight, such as the violence in Mesuji, Lampung, and in Bima, West Nusa Tenggara which had claimed the lives of a number of people. (IGT/T007)
