Jakarta (Antara Bali) - Indonesia and Uzbekistan have established relations and cooperation in various fields of mutual interest as the solid basis to strengthen the bilateral ties, a envoy has said.
"Both countries have gained a lot of experience of beneficial cooperation in the political, economic, investment and socio-cultural affairs," Uzbekistan's ambassador to Indonesia Shavkat Jamolov told Antara here on Tuesday.
Shavkat Jamolov made the statement prior to the commemoration of Uzbekistan's 25th anniversary on Thursday (Sept 1, 2016).
Uzbekistan gained its independence on August 31 1991, and September 1 was officially declared as the Independence Day of Uzbekistan.
Indonesia recognized the independence of the Republic of Uzbekistan on December 28, 1991 and is one of among a number of the first countries that recognized the Republic of Uzbekistan.
The two countries started diplomatic relations on June 23, 1992. Indonesia opened its embassy in Tashkent in May 1994, meanwhile the Embassy of Uzbekistan begin operating in Jakarta since December 1996.
In meantime, Uzbek President Islam Karimov visited Indonesia in June 1992 and the Indonesian former President Suharto held a reciprocal visit to Uzbekistan in April 1995.
Ambassador Jamolov also explained about the visit the Indonesian first President Soekarno to the Soviet Union in 1956. (WDY)
