President Jokowi To Install New Police Chief On Wednesday

Jakarta (Antara Bali)- President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) is scheduled to install Commissioner General Tito Karnavian as the new Police chief to succeed General Badrodin Haiti here, Wednesday.

"The induction of the new Police chief is planned for Wednesday afternoon, at 1:30 p.m. local time," Minister/State Secretary Pratikno stated here, Monday.

The president sent a letter regarding the police chief candidate to the House of Representatives (DPR) on June 15.

President Jokowi proposed the name of Commissioner General Karnavian as the sole candidate.

The head of state hoped the new chief will be able to boost the National Police's image and prestige.  
The DPR approved the nomination of Commissioner General Karnavian as the new National Police chief at a plenary meeting recently.

"Do you agree with the dismissal of General Badrodin Haiti and appointment of Commissioner General Tito Karnavian as the new Police chief?" Deputy House Speaker Fadli Zon stated at the plenary meeting.

After all legislators attending the meeting gave their approval, Zon banged the gavel as a sign of affirmation.

Chairman of the House's Commission III Bambang Soesatyo in his remarks noted that the commission, at its meeting on Thursday (June 23), also by acclamation, endorsed President Jokowi's decision to nominate Karnavian as the sole candidate for the Police chief's post.

"We understand and realize that the Police chief candidate should have capability, integrity, and competency, which are absolute prerequisites for the post," he affirmed.

Based on these criteria, the Commission III approved the nomination.    
Besides this, the national police are expected to develop greater synergy with other law enforcement agencies.    
Karnavian, previously chief of the National Counter-Terrorism Agency, joined the police academy in 1987 and earlier held posts, including that of the Jakarta Police chief and head of the Special Detachment 88 counter-terrorism squad.  

Born in Palembang, South Sumatra Province, on October 26, 1964, Karnavian graduated from the Exeter University in the Great Britain and earned his master's degree in Police Studies in 1993, among others.

In 1998, Karnavian graduated from the Massey University in Auckland, New Zealand, with Strategic Studies as a major subject. Later, Karnavian got his PhD from the Rajaratnam School of International Studies, Nanyang Technological University, in Singapore in 2013.  

Karnavian's reputation began to grow during his term with the Police's Special Detachment 88, which succeeded in neutralizing notorious terrorist leaders, such as Azhari Husin and Noordin M. Top. (WDY)
