Banda Aceh, Aceh (Antara Bali) - The Aceh provincial government supports the idea to designate 5 November as the international tsunami day, Aceh Governor Zaini Abdullah said here on Thursday.
"We support the idea to make 'November 5' as the world tsunami day, and hope the United Nations will approve the proporsal," he said.
The governor said the choice of November 5 as the world tsunami day is reasonable as it is based on the history of tsunamis which occurred in Japan.
On November 5, 1854, a man in the area which is now called Wakayana Prefecture, Japan, saved many people from tsunami.
"We hope the world tsunami day psychologically encourages the world community to care about and to share their experiences and knowledge in response to the tsunami," the governor said.
Aceh, he said, experienced a devastating tsunami on December 26, 2004. Hundreds of thousands of people were killed.
The governor remarked that geologically Aceh is prone to earthquakes and tsunamis. Last month Aceh was hit by earthquakes for dozens of times.
Therefore, he said, the Aceh people should continue to increase their awareness against the potential tsunamis, especially by improving mitigation ability, including the reduction of disaster risk impacts. (WDY)
