Al Sisi will be the first Egyptian head of state to visit Indonesia since former president Hosni Mubarak visited Jakarta on April 9-11, 1983.
He will visit Indonesia at the invitation of President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo. Alwi Shihab, the special envoy of President Jokowi for the Middle East and Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) countries, extended the invitation to Al Sisi while attending a ceremony marking the opening of the new stretch of the Suez Canal early August this year.
Al Sisi was inaugurated as Egyptian president on June 6, 2014, replacing Mohamed Mourse who was toppled at the end of June 2013.
Egypt is the first country to recognize Indonesia's independence on August 17, 1945.
The Egyptian media said the main mission of President Al Sisi's visit to Indonesia is to strengthen bilateral cooperation particularly in the economic and trade sectors. (WDY)
