Bengkulu (Antara Bali) - Port operator Pelabuhan Indonesia (Pelindo) II predicted that coal shipments from the Pulau Baai port of Bengkulu would reach 5 million tons in 2013 up from last year target of 4 million tons.
General manager of the state owned port operator Nurhikmat said he is optimistic the target could be achieved despite falling price of coal.
Nurhikmat said shipment target last year could not be achieved as a result of falling price of coal on the domestic and international markets.
He said coal from tens of producers in the provinces is piling up in the Pulau Baai port ready for shipment when the price is good.
He said Pelindo II will build a new coal terminal in the port to facilitate shipment with a loading capacity of 40 tons per hour.
The port already has a terminal with the same capacity, he said, adding the new one will be built around 100 meters away from the old terminal.
The port basin in the two terminals would be able to accommodate ships measuring up to 60,000 tons. (*/DWA/T007)
