Kuta (Antara Bali) - Minister for State Enterprises Dahlan Iskan said Indonesia has the potentials to soon break into the ranks of advanced nations.
Dahlan said Indonesia has huge 136 million middle class people that could serve as the driving motor for growth.
People having sufficient income would have greater self confidence and courage, he said. "They are more independent, more aggressive and want to get thing settled faster," he said speaking at the 50th anniversary of the Udayana University in Denpasar on Saturday.
Unfortunately, the country's bureaucracy has failed to properly cater to the taste of the middle class, he said. "Our bureaucracy is too slow and could not keep pace with the middle class, who want to move faster," he said, adding "This is a problem that has to be solved in the next five years."
Failure to bridge the gap could trigger conflict of interest the impact of which would be a setback , he said.
He said the 136 million middle class people, who are more outspoken would be a bigger threat than the country's 36 poor people to the bureaucracy.
He said the biggest part of our state budget, therefore, is used to ease conflicts with the middle class instead of improving the welfare of the 36 million poor people.
The country's population is enough as an asset to drive the country ahead , he said, adding, there are , however, a host of hurdles to be removed.(*/M038/T007)
