Denpasar (Antara Bali) - Choreographer Ian Knowles and his special responsibility with moving up 150 people around the stage in a synchronized manner is no easy task especially when they range from the young to mature adults.
As choreographer for the new show ‘Bali Agung’ Ian not only has people to work with but nearly a dozen elephants, birds of prey, domestic farm animals and even live tigers on the stage at different times.
He also stages the contemporary dances in the show and works closely with the gifted Balinese artist I Made Sidia in producing the tradition local dances.
Ian started his career as a professional dancer at the age of 16, and has worked in every medium of the entertainment industry.
In 2000 he was invited to be the original choreographer on the $8 million Australian production of “Pan†which was based on the well-known classic J M Barrie story of Peter Pan, the mischievous boy who magically refused to grow up.
The show was backed by the Jim Henson’s Creature Shop and the German MEAG company. It premiered in Sydney in 2000.
Since then Ian has worked to assist many great choreographer on large spectacular events. He is no stranger to Asia and in 2009 he worked with the creative director of ‘Bali Agung’, Peter Wilson as part of the creative team for “Colours of Malaysiaâ€.
Described as a cornucopia of spectacular traditional performances, colourful parades, and arts and crafts, “Colours of Malaysia’ is that country’s premier cultural extravaganza.
Back in South-East Asia, Ian is very enthusiastic about the new show and the mammoth theatre with its 80 meter by 40 meter stage “It gives plenty of scope for a choreographer,†Ian explained.
He said he loved the Balinese scenery, its people and its artistic culture and that he was proud to be bringing part of it to life for International visitors to the Island of the Gods.
“The amazing team working on ‘Bali Agung’ are creating a delightful and magical piece of entertainment, which will show Balinese culture, art and heritage to a whole new audience,†he concluded.
