Jakarta (Antara Bali) - Head of the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) Suryamin said Indonesia's inflation surged to a four year record high at 1.03 percent in January.
"Inflation was quite high compared to the same month since 2009," Suryamin said here on Friday.
He said normally inflation in January was less than 1 percent, adding in 2009, there was even a deflation of 0.07 percent in January.
He said the policy makers could address the matter seriously to control the early trend in inflation. "It is important to control the prices from the early start of a year to keep inflation under control," he said.
He said foods remains the main driver of inflation, followed by housing , water, electricity and gas , and fuels.
He said 62 of 66 consumer price index cities recorded an inflation with 4 cities having a deflation.
The highest inflation of 3.78 percent was recorded by Sibolga, the capital city of Tapanuli. Two of the four cities recording deflation included Sorong 0.98 percent, and Manokwari 0.75 percent both in Papua. (*/T007)
