Batam, Riau Island (Antara Bali) - An Indonesian legislator has hailed the re-election of Barack Obama as the US President for a second term, saying it would breathe fresh air into the Batam free trade zone, as well as the trade zones in Bintan and Karimun in Sumatra's Riau Islands Province.
"The economic liberalization was Obama's idea, and it is certainly in line with the spirit of the Free Trade Zone of Batam, Bintan and Karimun (FTZ BBK)," Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives Commission IX Harry Azhar Azis, said here on Friday.
The Batam free trade zone had also become a priority in the promotion of tourism in Indonesia, he said.
"In every negotiation with the US, the Indonesian government must be able to explain and draw benefits of the free trade concept. Industrial and economic activities will be more profitable if they are conducted in this free trade zone," he said.
Obama had so far demonstrated his support for Indonesia, he noted.During his first-term administration, several US businessmen had visited Batam to explore business opportunities in the free trade zone. (*/DWA/T007)
