Ternate, North Maluku (Antara Bali) - Thousands of people gathered at the Al-Munawwar Grand Mosque in Ternate, North Maluku, to conduct a special prayer to avert possible disaster that Mount Gamalama might bring following its recent eruption.
After the Eid prayer, the mosque's preacher, Dr Abdurahman Ismail, called on the congregation members to pray, so that Mount Gamalama's eruption would not claim lives.
He stated that the people in Ternate town were not affected by the eruption, but the residents of the district of Ternate Island were suffering from the ill-effects of the eruption.
In view of this, he called on the people to pray, so that the activity of the mountain could immediately decline, and their economic activities would not be disrupted.
"Mount Gamalama on Friday morning again spewed volcanic ash, and the activity has not subsided until now," he noted.
Head of the Mount Gamalama monitoring post Darno Lamane remarked that he was observing the mountain's activity, and its danger status remained at Level II.
He added that the rumbling sounds were still heard from the mountain on Friday, and the mountain's crater continued to spew thin volcanic ash, drifting westward of the Ternate Island.
