Jakarta (Antara Bali) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono led a ceremony to commemorate the National Heroes Day at the Kalibata heroes' cemetery in South Jakarta on Saturday morning.
The head of state was flanked by First Lady Ani Yudhoyono, Vice President Boediono and his spouse Herawati Boediono.
At 8:10 a.m. local time, the group prayed and listened to sirens being sounded to mark a remembrance of the war on November 10, 1945 that took place in Surabaya, East Java against the Dutch and British colonial forces, who had tried to recapture Indonesia.
Indonesia declared its Independence from the Dutch colonial power on August 17, 1945.
After observing a moment of silence, Yudhoyono laid a wreath at the heroes monument and spread flowers on several graves of fallen heroes, including former vice presidents Umar Wirahadikusuma and Sudharmono.
The president and his entourage later visited an exhibition entitled, "Prosperous Indonesia 2025," which displayed commodities from every province in Indonesia and the private collections of fallen heroes.(IGT)
