Medan (Antara Bali) - At least eight people have been killed in 28 traffic accidents in Medan, North Sumatra during the 2012 home-bound Lebaran exodus, police report.
"There were eight homecomers killed during the two-day monitoring of Ketupat Toba Operation 2012," Head of Public Relations and Information of North Sumatera Police, Adjunct Senior Commissioner MP Nainggolan said here on Monday.
According to Nainggolan, the police department also noted 42 people injured during the homebound exodus and financial losses around Rp73,9 million.
Meanwhile, another 331 traffic violators have been issued warnings from police officers.
Earlier, North Sumatra police spokesman Senior Commissioner Heru Prakoso said 3,388 police personnel had been deployed during the Ketupat Toba Operation to ensure security.
To assist in operational assistance 1.268 deputies have been assigned to help, including 440 deputies of Pamong Praja Police Unit, 220 scouts, 550 deputies from Transportation Services, and 58 deputies from Healthcare Services.(IGT)
