Denpasar (Antara Bali) - Ronald Ssemanda, 38, a Ugandan, was sentenced to 15 years in jail here on Tuesday for smuggling 1.141 kilograms of methamphetamine.
The Denpasar district court "sentenced him to 15 years in jail minus time spent in detention and fined him Rp2 billion, or another year in jail for failing to pay it," chief judge Puji Harian said delivering the verdict.
The panel of judges ruled that the defendant had imported and illegally distributed Category I non-plant narcotics weighing more than five grams in violation of Article 113 paragraph 2 of Law Number 35 of 2009 on narcotics.
The sentence was almost the same as the prosecutor's demand, which was 15 years in jail and a fine of Rp2 billion or two years more in jail for failing to pay the fine.
The judges considered that the defendant's act could destroy the lives young people and was in violation of the government's program in fighting narcotics.(IGT)
