Kuta (Denpasar Bali) - A Japanese citizen, Yao Noriyoshi (44), has been arrested by customs officers at Bali's Ngurah Rai airport for carrying marijuana and hashish to the island.
"He was caught on June 28 after disembarking from aircraft flight number SQ948 flying from Kansai to Denpasar via Singapore," Head of Ngurah Rai Customs Service and Supervision I Made Wijaya said here on Monday.
The Japanese was caught at around 10pm following an X-Ray check. Customs officers who were suspicious of his baggage had asked him to open the bag where they discovered three grams of hashish in a clear plastic packet covered with black tape between his clothes.
The officers also saw the suspect threw another evidence to a chair in the customs room which was found to be a packet of four grams of marijuana.
Made Wijaya said the illegal hashish was estimated to cost Rp600,000 per gram in the street.
Due to his actions the Japanese has been charged of violating Article 113 sub-article 1 and 2 of Law Number 35 of 2009 on narcotics and is facing a maximal penalty of death and a fine of maximally Rp10 billion.
The lightest sentence for him is five years in jail and a fine of Rp1 billion.
The suspect has been undergoing an intensive examination at the the Bali regional police command.(*)
