Solo, C Java (Antara Bali)- As the Bengawan Solo River overflowed its banks, a flood hit Daleman area, Ngringo Village, Karanganyar District, Central Java Province, forcing 72 families comprising 175 people to flee to higher grounds.
The flood was worse that than in 2012, Kuswanto, a local resident, said here, Sunday.
The local authorities distributed emergency tents and meals to the victims of the flood.
In several areas, the floodwaters reached a height of up to three meters.
The Bengawan Solo River began to spill over its bank at 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, and the waters kept rising.
On Sunday morning, the waters began to recede slightly. But, in some areas like Wonogiri, thick cloud was still seen, indicating possible rains.
In the meantime, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) instructed its regional branch offices (BPBD) to stay even more alert in anticipation of possible floods and landslides following signs of climate change impact.
"BNPB has instructed all BPBDs whose areas may receive major rainfall to be more alert about floods, landslides and whirlwinds," Head of the Data and Information Center of the BNPB, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, said in Jakarta, on Saturday. (WDY)
