Semarang (Antara Bali) - Genuk market in the Central Java provincial capital of Semarang caught fire at the wee hours of Friday, burning hundreds of kiosks.
The fire started at one of the kiosks which sold clothes and accessories, Danang, an eyewitness, said.
"When I and some local residents were at a foodstall near the market at around 01.00 a.m. on Friday we smelled something burned. When we were trying to check the odor we found the kiosk in the center of the market burned," he said.
He said a number of residents put out the fire at the kiosk by spraying water. "It is believed the fire flared up again and burned hundreds of kiosks after strong winds had blown it," he said. No injuries or fatalities were reported.
At least six fire engines with tens of fire fighters from the Semarang city fire department were sent to the scene.
By 04.30 a.m. on Friday the fire fighters were still trying hard to put out the blaze which ravaged around 300 kioks in the market.(*/DWA/IGT)
