Gorontalo (Antara) - Thirteen foreign delegations of embassies who will participate in Boalemo Festival on September 10, admired typical Gorontalo embroidered cloth named Karawo here on Tuesday.
The delegations came from friendly countries namely Kazakhstan, Sudan, Croatia, Mexico, Armenia, Mozambique, Laos, United Arab Emirates, Azerbaijan, Poland, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Switzerland.
Five hundred karawo craftsmen across Gorontalo province are embroidering the traditional cloth in Gorontalo. The korowa-making process is composed of designing, slicing and pulling out the thread and embroidering the thread on the plain fabric.
An Armenian delegation member, Vardan Sargsyan, admires the Gorontalo typical embroidery. "This craft requires very high imagination, very difficult but it has its own identity," he said.
A member of the National Craft Council of Gorontalo, Ida Syaidah, said the mass embroidery is a program carried out by an organization in collaboration with the Gorontalo provincial administration.
The organization has gathered 500 karawo craftsmen to embroider in Boalemo Festival.
"We invite people of Gorontalo to watch the karawo-making process in order to make them understand this traditional cloth and love it," she said.
Karawo, which in Gorontalo means embroidered by hand, is a traditional fabric of Gorontalo made with hand embroidery techniques.
Karawo is made on fabric using plain or multicolored yarns.
The manufacturing process is done by slicing and revoking yarns from the fiber cloth, then embroidered with needles and threads appropriate with variety of motifs.
In addition to a long time (about one to two weeks) process, karawo fabric manufacturing also requires a lot of people. At least three people are required with different tasks. (WDY)
