Jakarta (Antara Bali) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhyono urged all parties here on Wednesday to play an active role in preventing communal conflicts that have often happened in the regions recently.
In their own ways regional leaders from village heads to provincial governors must care when seeds of conflict emerge, he said when opening a coordination meeting on law enforcement at the Attorney General Office.
"If signs of tension between different ethnic, religious or other groups in the community were seen all parties must prevent them to escalate into violence and clashes. If this is done, a lot of incidents could be avoided but if this is neglected anything can happen," he said.
He said in that context all parties have to be actively involved as they are all responsible over the matter, reminding that the country has already been divided up into villages, sub-districts, districts and provinces.
President Yudhoyono said in some cases the police had often been criticized as being too slow or not thorough in settling them and because of that the police as well as the government had often been accused of ignoring them with impunity.(IGT)
