Jakarta (Antara Bali) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) performed the evening Tarawih prayers of the fasting month at Istiqlal grand mosque on Monday or first day of Ramadan 1437 Hegira.
Wearing a white long-sleeved shirt and sarong plaid gray, the President who was accompanied by Minister/State Secretary Pratikno arrived at the mosque at 6:50 p.m. Western Indonesia Standard time (WIB).
The president and Minister Pratikno performed the prayers at the forefront in the country's largest mosque.
Acting as imam (leader of the prayers) for Isya or evening prayer and Tarawih H Hasanuddin Sinaga MA and preacher Prof Dr H Nasaruddin Umar, who is concurrently the great Imam of the Istiqlal mosque.
At 8:30 p.m. the president and his entourage left the mosque.
Meanwhile on Sunday evening (June 5), Religious Affairs Minister Lukman Hakim Saefuddin announced that Monday (June 6, 2016) is the first day of the fasting month of Ramadan 1437 Hegira.
The minister made the remarks after presiding over a hearing attended by General Chairman of the Indonesian Ulemas Council Ma'ruf Amin, a number of chiefs of Islamic mass organizations, including Islamic figures in Jakarta.(WDY)
