Palembang, S.Sumatra (Antara Bali) - Former Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) has said the capital economic system, which is applied in many countries by laying the economy on market mechanism, is very dangerous to the environment as the players tend to get greedy.
"The world economy is still conventional and is capital-based. If it is not promptly corrected and repaired, the system will threaten the sustainability of human life on earth," Yudhoyono said in a public lecture at the State Islamic University Raden Patah, Palembang (South Sulawesi) on Wednesday.
To that end, the state must take an action and strengthen its presence as environmental stewards to take full responsibility, he added.
According to him, this correction is based on the application of the industrial revolution in the 18th century that led to the massive environmental damage although on the other hand was able to boost economic growth.
"The concept of sustainable development must be put forward, and for the agricultural sector, the most suitable model is green economy. It is an economic system that is able to improve the quality of human life with social justice," SBY remarked.
According to him, as a developing country, Indonesia with a population which estimated reach 306 million by 2035 should totally transform related to the development of agricultural sector.
Green economy concept is contained in the Sustainable Development Goals 2015-2030 (Millennium Development Goals substitute) whose main objective to reduce poverty and eliminate starvation. SBY was one of the drafters.
From now on, according to SBY, the state should count in any use of natural resources including production, distribution and consumption.
"We all have to get out of greedy economic and transform to green economy," SBY, who is also the President of The Global Green Growth Institute, said. (WDY)
