Islamabad (Antara Bali) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said here on Thursday that he and other leaders of the Group of Eight Developing (D-8) countries agreed that violence and bloodshed in Syria must be stopped.
He said leaders of D8 countries namely Indonesia, Turkey, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Iran, Egypt, Pakistan and Nigeria had also agreed to send peace keeping forces there.
"If a cease-fire is reached we will send peacekeeping forces there. It is like when we (Indonesia) sent troops to maintain peace in Lebanon," he said before returning home at 11pm local time after the D8 summit.
President Yudhoyono said he spent no less than five hours to discuss with other leaders how to stop violence that is still continuing in Syria.
He said he had discussed solutions to the deadlock in the Middle East country with among others President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran, Turkish prime minister Recep Tayip Erdogan, Pakistani president Asif Ali Zardari and Egypt's vice president Mahmud Makki.
The leaders of the countries with majority Moslem population had agreed on the need to stop violence and bloodshed in Syria and for a cease-fire and to send humanitarian aid to Syrian refugees which has so far been borne by Turkey. With regard to it Indonesia has expressed readiness to contribute.
"Thirdly, there must be transition of power or political transition towards a new government," President Yudhoyono said. (*/M038/T007)
