Jakarta (Antara Bali) - The National Disaster Mitigation Board (BNPB) has warned Jakarta of bigger floods with swelling waters from upstream area of the Ciliwung river.
The river almost overflowed its bank upstream in the mountain resort area of Puncak sending water to downstream area in Jakarta, the agency said.
"Heavy rain in Puncak on Sunday resulted in rapid increase in the water volume in the river," Sutopo Nugroho, head of the agency's Information and Data Center, said here on Sunday.
Sutopo said the surface of water at the Katulampa dam has also climbed to an alarming level at 180 centimeters or the highest this year.
The big flow is expected to reach Depok, some 15 kilometer south of Jakarta at 20.30 on Sunday and Manggarai, South Jakarta, at 03.30 on Monday, he said.
"Currently the rain is still pouring down in Puncak," he said.
Areas likely to be hit by flooding in Jakarta include Rawajati, Kalibata, Pengadegan, Gang Arus or Cawang, Kebon Baru, Bukit Duri, Bidara Cina, and Kampung Melayu, he said.
"BNPB and the Jakarta public works office have ready to cope with the impact of imminent flooding impact," he said.(*/DWA)
