Pontianak (Antara Bali) - A fire gutted six shophouses at Danau Sentarum Street in Pontianak, capital of West Kalimantan province, on Sunday.

Police had questioned a number of witnesses and owner of the shophouse where the fire allegedly came from, chief of the Pontianak city police station Commissioner Temmangangro Machmud  said.

"We have seized a gas cylinder as evidence," he said.

It was believed that a gas cylinder leak at the shophouse  which ran laundry business sparked the fire. The blaze later spread to the other shophouses.

The fire inflicted hundreds of millions of rupiahs in losses, he said. "We are still investigating the case," he said.

The fire caused panic to local residents who tried to put it out but to no avail. No injuries nor fatalities were reported in the fire. (*/DWA)
