Jakarta (Antara Bali) - The process of democracy in Indonesia after the downfall of President Soeharto regime in 1998 has an influential impact on ASEAN foreign policy, an observer has said.
"In ASEAN, Indonesia is consistently promoting democracy and human rights foundation, after passing through various obstructions and obstacles to achieving reforms," said Donald E. Weatherbee, the University of South Carolina political observer and international relations.
Speaking in his presentation on The Progress of Indonesian Foreign Policy, Weatherbee said Indonesia has gone through a winding road in restoring confidence of partner countries after the reform in 1998.Donald E. Weatherbee has been described as the dean of the American scholars of the international Relations of Southeast Asia.
His first book (1966) was a study of Indonesian political ideology in the Sukarno era. (IGT)
