Denpasar (Antara Bali) - The Denpasar District Court here Friday sentenced 14-year-old Australian teenager LM to two months in jail for drug possession.
In its verdict, the court said LM had been proven guilty of violating Law No 35/2009, article 127, paragraph 1a, on illegal drug possession.
The prosecution had earlier demanded a three-month jail sentence.
The judge's considerations for a lighter sentence included the fact that the defendant had never been involved in a criminal act before, he had admitted his guilt, and promised not to repeat it.
The defendant's lawyer, Mohammad Rifan, said he would need time to think whether or not to recommend an appeal.
"We are a little disappointed with the judge's final decision, we had expected LM to be returned to his parents and sent to rehabilitation center," Rifan said.
LM was caught on October 4, 2011 on Jalan Padma, Legian, Kuta, Bali, carrying 6.9 grams of marijuana in his pockets.(*)
