Surabaya, E Java (Antara Bali) - Indonesia's Agriculture Minister Amran Sulaiman saw off three tons of superior "Arum Manis" mangoes being exported to Singapore from here on Wednesday.
"Every year we export more than 200 tons (of these mangoes)," he said while seeing off Arum Manis mangoes' export at Jalan Tidar.
He said if there were 1,000 exporters, then 200,000 tons of Arum Manis mangoes would have been exported.
The minister said he would tighten the safety standards for this fruit so that it could be re-exported to China.
"The safety standards will be tightened. We will tighten these. The fruit must be sorted well before being shipped," he said.
President director of PT Wijaya Fruits, exporter Gianto Wijaya said Arum Manis mango has a vast market and sells at a high price, adding that a kilogram of Arum Manis mangoes sells at around Rp50,000.
He said the fruit was also being exported to various other countries, including Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, Hong Kong and Saudi Arabia.
He said he hoped that productivity could be increased and more exporters would be involved in the business.
"We hope the volume of production could be increased," he added. (WDY)
