Pandeglang, Banten (Antara Bali) - President Joko Widodo attended the 100th anniversary event and opening of 19th congress of Mathla'ul Anwar Islamic organization in Pandeglang, Banten province, on Saturday.

The event was attended by 500 Mathla'ul Anwar representatives from 30 provinces in the country.

President Joko Widodo was flanked by religious affairs minister Lukman Hakim and acting governor of Banten Rano Karno.

Mathla'ul Anwar was established on July 10, 1916 by KH E Mohammad Yasin, KH TB Mohammad Sholeh, KH Mas Abdurrahman in Menes, Pandeglang, Banten.

The organization was set up four years after the establishment of Muhammadiyah in Yogyakarta on November 18, 1912 by KH Ahmad Dahlan, and 10 years before the establishment of Nahdlatul Ulama on January 31, 1926 in Surabaya, East Java, by KH Hasyim Asyari.

Mathla'ul Anwar now has representatives in 24 provinces and plans to set up more in other provinces like East Nusa Tenggara, Gorontalo and Papua.

The organization manages hunderd educational institutions from elementary to university levels. The Mathla'ul Anwar University is located in Pandeglang, Banten.

Other officials attending the event were social affairs minister Khofifah Indar Parawansa, home affairs minister Tjahjo Kumolo and chief of the National Intelligence Agency Sutiyono and Mathla'ul Anwar advisor Wiranto. (WDY)
