Jakarta (Antara Bali) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has urged Indonesian women to become "21st-century Kartinis" to help the nation achieve further progress.

"The best way to express gratitude to Madame Kartini is by becoming 21st-century Kartinis to advance the national life," the president wrote on Twitter on Sunday, coinciding with the commemoration of Kartini Day.

Every April 21, the Indonesian people honor the birth of Raden Adjeng Kartini in 1879, who pioneered in the emancipation Indonesian women.

Kartini, a prominent Javanese, is Indonesian national heroine whose concerns were not only in the area of women's rights, but also other problems in her society. Kartini saw that the struggle for women to obtain their freedom, autonomy and legal equality was just part of a wider movement.

President Yudhoyono has launched his Twitter account since last Saturday (April 13, 2013) and now has more than one million followers. (IGT)
