Denpasar (Antara Bali) - Agriculture Minister Suswono has expressed hope that all Indonesian farmers will return to organic fertilizers to restore soil fertility.
"Farmers have so far used inorganic fertilizers for efficiency reasons to get output as expected," the minister said on the sidelines of a harvest at Subak Padanggalak in Bali on Sunday.
Soil and ecosystem had been damaged due to farmers' constant habit of using inorganic fertilizers in large quantities, he said.
"Under these circumstances, we expect farmers to gradually return to organic fertilizers which are processed through modern technology," Suswono said.
The minister said since it took a long time to produce traditional organic fertilizers farmers chose inorganic fertilizers to speed up rice cultivation even at the expense of soil fertility degradation.(IGT)
