Mangupura (Antara Bali) - The construction of the Subak Segempel dam in the district of Badung, Bali, is to be completed by the end of this year.

The dam now under construction the village of Bongkasa Pertiwi , will be able to irrigate 176 hectares of rice field in that area, head of the district public works office I.B Surya Suamba said here on Friday.

Surya said the project which is estimated to cost Rp7.8 billion will irrigate 94,750 hectares of farm lands in Subak Segempel and 81.5 hectares in Subak Citra.

The dam is expected to be able to cope with scarcity of water for irrigation in dry season especially in Subak Segempel, he said, adding,"I hope this dam would have significant impact on the welfare of the local people especially farmers."

The construction work is under the public works office starting June, 2017 with contractor PT. Undagi Jaya Mandiri and consultant CV. Prema Wangun Jaya.

The government plans to build more than 60 dams in five years all over the country to control floods and to improve irrigation of farm lands. (WDY)
