"Development of seaports should be proportional between Java and the outer regions to improve performance in the maritime sector, Steven said,
All regions, western, central and eastern regions of the country are similarly potential to contribute to development of maritime sector in the country, he said after attending a seminar on port business here on Thursday.
He said 70 percent of Indonesian ships carry cargoes from Java resulting in wide disparity of prices between Java and other regions.
He also noted that the condition of Indonesian port infrastructure is poor especially in the regions.
The difference is sharp in the port condition in Java and Papua, he cited.
Strategic places for port development are found not only in Java but also in the region, he said, citing, Banjarmasin is more strategic as it is located in in central part of the country.
Chairman of the East Java branch of the Indonesian Association of Logistics and Forwarders (ALFI) Hengky Pratoko said Indonesian porets are the lowest in quality in ASEAN.
Indonesia is the 80th in the world in port quality that improvement is urgent including in human resources, he said. (WDY)
