"The government should give priority to the improvement of the infrastructural facilities in the two seaports rather than to development of the bridge," Carmelita Hartoto, the chairwoman of the Indonesian National Shipowners Association (INSA) said here on Friday.
She said the development of the JSS bridge which would connect Java and Sumatra islands was too costly so that the government had better improve the infrastructures of Bakauheni port (in the eastern tip Sumatra) and Marak port (in the western part of Java) and to increase the number of ferries.
The INSA chairwoman said that improvement in the two ferry ports should not be followed by tariff increase because it would create high cost and burden for the distribution of goods and services.
One of the problems faced in Indonesia is the high cost of logistics distribution and transportation, she said.(DWA/IGT)
