Australian Death Row Convicts Isolated In Kerobokan Prision

Kuta, Bali (Antara Bali) - Australian death row convicts Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan have been moved to isolation cells in Denpasar Kerobokan prison, Badung District, Bali.

"I came here to see conditions in Kerobokan prison where they have been isolated," Momock Bambang Samiarso, the head of Bali`s High Prosecutor`s Office, said here on Friday.

He noted that the two death row convicts, who were arrested in 2005 for trying to smuggle out 8.3 kilograms of heroin worth some Rp40 billion to Australia, have been placed in a special room and will be shifted shortly to Cilacap`s Nusakambangan prison in Central Java.

"I met them in the isolation room today," Momock stated.

However, the Bali`s prosecutor`s office could not say when they will be moved to Nusakambangan prison as the Central Java prison was not ready yet.

"We have been coordinating with the Nusakambangan prison authorities; it is not ready yet. As soon as it is ready, Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan will be moved there. We are now waiting for confirmation from Nusakambangan," Momock remarked.

It was earlier planned that the two inmates would be moved this week, but the Nusakambangan prison will need more time.

The Attorney General`s Office plans to execute 11 convicts on death row, including Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, whose clemency pleas had been rejected by President Joko Widodo.

Three convicts face execution over murder charges. They are Indonesian citizens Iyen bin Azwar, Harun bin Ajis, and Sargawi, alias Ali bin Sanusi.

Six convicts, including five foreigners, to be put to death over narcotics cases are Mary Jane Fiesta Veloso from the Philippines, Serge Areski Atlaoui from France, Martin Anderson, alias Belo, from Ghana, Indonesia citizen Zainal Abidin, Raheem Agbaje Salami from Cordova, and Rodrigo Gularte from Brazil.

Meanwhile, Attorney General HM Prasetyo has reiterated Indonesia will go ahead with its plan to execute the convicts, including the one with a mental disorder.

According to him, mental disorder in a death row convict will not deter Indonesia from carrying out its plan to execute the convicts.

He added there has been no rule banning the execution of convicts with mental disorder. Only the execution of pregnant women or underage children is banned, he said here on Friday. HM Prasetyo noted the execution of the second batch of death row convicts will be carried out as soon as all preparations are in place.

He revealed he has been coordinating with the police for preparing the firing squad for executions, with the regional offices of the ministry of religious affairs for assembling priests for the convicts, and to finalize the location for executions and other procedures. (WDY)
