"Some 10 districts have become leaders in inclusive education and there are 10 more districts which are poised to follow suit," Mudjito said here at an inclusive education workshop on Thursday.
He pointed out that inclusive schools are more than special needs schools. "Inclusive schools are basically regular schools that are located not too far from the houses of children with special needs," Mudjito noted.
He said there were currently some 2,000 inclusive schools across the country. "The ministry has donated Rp35 million for the construction of such schools, but only 450 schools have been built with the funds so far," Mudjito continued.
"The donation is also used for the provision of various necessary facilities at such schools," he added.
Sharing Mudjito's opinion, the Education Ministry's director-general for the management of basic and secondary education, Suyanto, stated that the provision of inclusive education was not solely the government's responsibility.
"All parties have to take part in promoting inclusive education," he pointed out. "Based on a study conducted by Hellen Keller International, the development of inclusive education system in our country faces challenges in the areas of teacher competency and education quality," Suyanto added.
