Bekasi (Antara Bali) - A fire ravaged nine shop-houses in Bekasi on the eastern outskirts of Jakarta on Wednesday morning.

"The fire broke out at around 07.00 a.m. when the shop-houses were closed," spokesman of the Bekasi municipal fire department, Duddy Fasmymy, said.

He believed the fire was caused by a short circuit at the  shop-house number 14 which sold durian ice cream.

"The fire later spread quickly to other nearby shop-houses due to strong winds," he said.

All contents of the nine shop-houses could not be saved, he said.

The fire could be put out nearly one hour later after nine fire trucks had been sent to the scene, he said.(IGT/T007)
