Denpasar (Antara Bali) - Indonesian police are investigating a recent Karobokan prison riot in Bali to see if it was spontaneous or provoked.
"The incident is still being investigated. It would take time. But conditions must first be made conducive," the deputy chief of Bali's regional police command, Brigadier General Ketut Untung Yoga Ana, said on the sidelines of a discussion held by the Indonesia Tourism Industries Association here on Friday, which was also attended by Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Jero Wacik.
Regarding law enforcement, he said "it is still ongoing. We, the police, are investigating to see if it was caused by illegal levies or other factors".
But the root cause of the problem in the penitentiary would be investigated by a team and for that the minister of law and human rights had even come to check it.
"What is clear is we, the police are investigating the criminal case in the incident. With regard to the penitentiary the police will give a security backup," he said.
Regarding the transfer of inmates he said it would be the task of the penitentiary's management.
A total of 1,015 inmates including foreigners, male and female, from 17 countries at present live in the penitentiary which actually has a capacity for only 300 people.(*/T007)
