"Indonesia's concern about the increasing cases of piracy has been discussed and in essence Somalia's capacity needs to be increased," he said here on Thursday.
He said the issue was discussed at the bilateral meeting between Indonesia and Somalia at the 16th Ministerial Conference and Commemorative Meeting here from May 23 to 27.
The development in Somalia is very concerning. Therefore increased capacity is needed so that that country could overcome or even prevent recurrence of piracy cases.
Marty said Somalia has to learn from Indonesia's experience in dealing with piracy on the Strait of Malacca and take similar efforts.
"If we see Indonesia's experience in overcoming piracy in the Malacca Strait it was successful because our capacity was increased through cooperation with other countries such as Malaysia and Singapore which are littoral countries," he said.
Besides discussing about Indonesia's experience in dealing with piracy Marty said Somalia also expressed hope for good cooperation with Indonesia in the meeting.
Cases of piracy have often happened in Somalia and recently an Indonesian ship Sinar Kudus was hijacked while traveling through its waters to Rotterdam, the Netherlands, on March 16, 2011.
The ship carried nickel with 31 crew 20 of them Indonesians on board. The ship was released after ransom was paid to the pirates.(*)
