Jakarta (Antara Bali) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has extended his sincere gratitude to all Indonesian athletes that had participated in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The president received the athletes at the Presidential Palace here on Wednesday after they took part in a parade from the Youth and Sports Ministry's Office in Senayan to the palace.
"On behalf of the people of Indonesia and the government, I congratulate and thank all the athletes for their hard work to achieve maximum results at the Olympic Games in Rio," President Jokowi stated.
The president remarked that in the 2012 London Olympics, Indonesian athletes had grabbed two silver and bronze medals, but this year, at the Rio Olympics, they won one gold and two silver medals.
The athletes who returned home from Rio were warmly welcomed in the country with a parade along the streets of Jakarta on Wednesday.
Aboard an open-top bus called the Bandros, the gold medalist badminton duo Tontowi Ahmad/Liliyana Natsir, silver medalist weightlifters Eko Yuli Irawan and Sri Wahyuni, and several Olympians waved to the crowds that welcomed them with small national flags along the streets of Jakarta.
The athletes departed from the Youth and Sports Ministry's Office and were escorted by police vehicles and several Harley Davidson bikes cruising along the General Sudirman Street and MH Thamrin Street before arriving at the Presidential Palace to meet the head of state.
"We are very grateful as our players gave us a special prize to mark Indonesia's 71th Anniversary by winning the gold medal," Minister of Youth and Sports Imam Nahrawi noted in his remarks after receiving the athletes, who had arrived home, on Tuesday.
Ahmad and Liliyana emerged the champions in the badminton mixed doubles in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, after defeating the Malaysian duo in the final on the same day when the country was celebrating its Independence Day.
Indonesia closed the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil at 46th rank, bagging one gold medal in badminton and two silver medals in weightlifting.
