Medan, N Sumatra (Antara Bali) -- President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo opened the fourth congress of the Indonesian Justice and Unity Party (PKPI) here on Saturday.

In his opening address to the congress, the president spoke about the challenges faced by Indonesia, including high unemployment rate, high poverty rate, social divide and corruption.

Nearly 7.2 million people in Indonesia were unemployed in 2014, Jokowi said.

He added that 10.96 percent of Indonesians lived in poverty last year.

In addition, the social gap between the rich and the poor and the economic gap between the western and eastern parts of Indonesia also posed a challenge for the government, he pointed out.

In the ASEAN region, Indonesia is currently ranked sixth, after Singapore, the Philippines, Malaysia and Thailand, in terms of corruption, he stated.

"This is homework that the government must settle altogether," Jokowi remarked.

Also present at the opening ceremony of the PKPI's congress were Chairman of the Regional Representatives Council (DPD) Irman Gusman, Law and Human Rights Minister Yasona Laoli, Chairman of the People's Conscience (Hanura) Party Wiranto, Chairman of the National Democratic (Nasdem) Party Surya Paloh, Chairman of the Golkar Party of the Ancol national congress Agung Laksono, former vice president Tri Sutrisno, and Chief of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) Megawati Soekarno Putri.
