Jayapura, Papua (Antara Bali) -- President Joko Widodo is on a working visit to Papua on Saturday, during which he will also attend a national event celebrating Christmas.
The president and his entourage, including First Lady Iriana, departed from capital city Jakarta's airport at 7 a. m. aboard the presidential plane and arrived at the eastern region's Sentani Airport at 2.34 p. m. after flying for five hours.
President Jokowi, as he is also known, was welcomed by Governor of Papua Lukas Enembe, Cendrawasih Regional Military Commander Major General Fransen G Siahaan, Papua Regional Police Command Chief Inspector General Yotje Mende, and Regional House Speaker Yunus Wonda.
Following his arrival to the region, he visited the local Phara Market, where he was welcomed by thousands of people who had been gathered there since morning for the occasion.
President Jokowi arrived at the market at 3.27 p. m. accompanied by First Lady Iriana, Governor Enembe and other members of his entourage.
At the market, he laid a cornerstone to mark its development, a "Smart House" education service facility, and a "Healthy House" health service facility.
The new Phara Market will be built on a five-hectare plot of land to accommodate some 1,500 traders.
Jokowi stated that the construction of the new market would be started early in January and would be completed in a year.
With regard to this plan, he urged Papua Governor Lukas Enembe and Jayapura District Head Mathiusa Awaitauw to ensure the smooth implementation of the project, which was one of the promises he made during his presidential campaign in the region.
"Please monitor it (the project) to ensure that it is started immediately," he emphasized.
The president added, "If the construction is not completed on time, I will not visit the region again for the New Year's event in 2016. So please, Mr. Governor and Mr. District Head, remember this."
On the occasion, President Joko Widodo also vowed to traders that he would arrange for management training and capital assistance for them. "But do not use the assistance to buy a television set," he said, drawing laughter. (WDY)
