Sumenep (Antara Bali) - Head of Sumenep Police Adjunct Senior Commissioner Dirin has stated that 60 illegal immigrants were stranded in Guagua Island, Raas sub-district, on Thursday morning and their data are still being collected.
"We can't say the exact number of immigrants, but we estimated that there were 60 of them," Dirin said here on Thursday.
The immigrants landed in Guagua Island after their wooden boat broke down. They were allegedly headed for Australia to seek asylum.
"They are now detained at the house of a local village officer and their data are being collected by the police. So there is still a possibility that there are more than 60 of them," Dirin explained.
According to an interim investigation report, the immigrants are mostly from Iran and Iraq.
On Wednesday (July 25), the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) informed the police about the stranded immigrants in Sumenep. The Sumenep Police then deployed its members to follow up on the information.(IGT)
