Jakarta (Antara Bali) - Nurhayati, an Indonesian maid working in Singapore, was spared the death penalty and would get 20 years in jail instead, according to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, received here on Wednesday.
Singapore police arrested Nurhayati on the charge that the maid from Indramayu area, West Java province, had killed her employer's child.
According to the statement from Indonesian Foreign Affairs Ministry, Singaporean prosecutors have agreed to drop their demand for a death punishment and Nurhayati will instead serve 20 years in jail or a life sentence, as per Section 304(a) Chapter 224 Penal Code.
"The embassy will keep giving legal advice to Nurhayati during her trial," the Indonesian Ambassador to Singapore, Andri Hadi, said.(DWA/IGT)
