Indonesia’s Ministry of Transportation has been encouraging women to pursue a career in the maritime sector, and actively participate to actualize Indonesia as the global maritime fulcrum.

“There is no gender preference anymore. We welcome women in the maritime sector and hope to have more of them,” Director General of Maritime Transportation, Agus H Purnomo, stated in Labuan Bajo Port, East Nusa Tenggara, Friday.

He made this remark during a campaign Indonesia conducted to celebrate the World's Maritime Day 2019 themed “Empowering Women in Maritime Community”.

The maritime industry does not belong to only men, it needs many more men and women who could be involved in this sector, Purnomo emphasized.

“The government has been providing support on the gender equality issue, which has been proved by the numerous women employed as professional seafarers on private as well as state ships,” Purnomo explained.

As this issue arose, Purnomo pinned high hopes on the fact that there would be no gender domination in this sector.

On the occasion, the community of Woman in Maritime Indonesia (WIMA Indonesia) honored Captain Entin Kartini with an award for the Most Inspirational Woman in Maritime Sector 2019.

Captain Kartini broke the record as the very first woman to captain a ship in Indonesia, which is considered the highest stage in the career of a seafarer. (INE)
