Warning Against Spread of Avian Influenza

Denpasar (Antara Bali) - A member of the Bali regional legislative assembly has urged the provincial administration to seriously take precaution to prevent the spread of avian influenza in the tourist island.

"We want the government to address that matter seriously  especially with a new variant of the virus believed to be more dangerous,"  deputy chairman of the Commission IV of the regional legislative assembly Ketut Kariyasa Adnyana said here on Saturday.

Adnyana said the virus has attacked three regencies in Bali including Jembrana, Bangli  and  Klungkung.

The disease could easily spread to other areas  and cities and endanger people in Bali unless serious steps taken to eradicate the virus, he said.

Meat consumption is high in Bali  as a tourist island and cases of bird flue  could discourage tourist to visit Bali, he said.

The new variant of bird flue was believed to have come from Central Java and East Java.(IGT)
