Surabaya, E Java (Antara Bali) - The Surabaya city government in East Java is planning to launch an electronic payment system for parking (e-parking) on several sidewalks of the city.

Head of the Surabaya City Transportation Office Irvan Wahyu Drajat said here on Sunday the office is looking into the possibility of implementing e-parking on the city's sidewalks.

"We will implement the policy in several areas as a pilot project," he said.

The several areas include Bungkul Park and Diponegoro Street.

The office is drawing up a master plan for e-parking by collecting inputs from several agencies including the Surabaya City Legislative Council (DPRD), parking attendants  and the public.

Actually, the city launched an e-parking system seven years ago but it is only implemented in certain areas.

"It has been implemented in several areas belonging to the city government, including tourist sites and malls," he said.

The plan to implement the e-parking system on the city's sidewalks is part of the effort to implement municipal regulation number 1 of 2008 on progressive parking, he said.

"It seems that there had been injustice between those who park their cars for five minutes and those who park their cars for five hours because both of them pay the same parking fees," he said. (WDY)
