"We will arrange 200 hectares to build the world center for Islamic studies," the vice president stated here Monday.
Kalla noted that Indonesia is the largest Muslim country in the world. Although there are differences in certain aspects, the people mostly live in peaceful coexistence.
"We are grateful for it. Indonesia should have a major role in the development of Islam in the world," Kalla remarked.
During a meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation at the Asian-African Conference 2015 in Bandung some time ago, all state governments requested Indonesia to play a greater role in solving issues in the Islamic world.
Kalla stressed that Indonesia should have an international center of Islamic studies development so that people around the world will no longer have to focus only on Al Azhar (Egypt) to learn Islam.
"If people want to know Islam more deeply, they can just come to Indonesia," the vice president observed.
He added that the international Islamic center will be built regardless of the cost that will be needed.
Muslims constitute the world's second largest religious group. Islam currently has 1.57 billion adherents, making up over 23% of the world population.
Indonesia has some 204.8 million Muslims, accounting for 12.7% of the total Muslim population in the world. (WDY)
